A Family That Skis Together, Stays Together
It's been over 10 years since my husband and I last skied as we've been busy having children who are now 8, 6 and 3 years old. Finally our youngest is ready to be put on skis.
Through ParentSource.ca
we learned Brimacombe Ski Resort was having an Open House in October so
we thought we'd take the kids and introduce them to the hill without
snow. We all had a great day meeting the friendly staff and
introducing the kids to the magic carpet, chairlift and t-bar near the
snow school. Of course the kids favourite part were the donuts but our
favourite were the great deals in the ProShop! We decided to register
the kids in ski lessons, then waited for the snow to fall.
Fast forward to January and our first day of lessons. A little
chaotic trying to find our groups but we all loved the lessons. The
instructors have been wonderful and after two lessons the
classes are already going up the chairlift and down the big hills!
The other day my husband and I had the wonderful opportunity,
thanks to the help of some great friends, to have a "date" on the hill,
child-free. We arrived at "the Brim" on a very picturesque day of a
light snowfall and temperatures just below zero. After picking up our
lift tickets from a very friendly lady we skied up to the lift without
waiting in line. On the lift we marveled at the beautiful snow
covered trees lining every run. With children you sometimes miss out
on taking in what's around you because you're too busy making sure they
don't fall off the lift! We were told the trees had been planted by
members and volunteers many years ago. I found hearing the history
of the hill gave it such character as you can almost envision the
old car getting skiers up the hill! It's true, check out the
website! http://www.brimacombe.ca/story/history
We really enjoyed skiing Rutherford's Run, Richard's Landing and
Challenger, which end with the wonderful smell of the wood fire burning
in the lodge as you ski to the lift. The conditions were amazing
especially considering the previous day's rain. I was told it was due
to the new groomer. It really does a great job! The staff were very
friendly and always helpful to us newbies! Back at the lodge
we learned about the wonderful CADS program they have at Brimacombe.
If you or someone you know has children who have special needs and
wonder if skiing would ever be a possiblility don't hesitate to check
out the website http://www.disabledskiingontario.com/Oshawa.html and contact Brimacombe.
With a variety of lessons and programs plus special events there
is something to interest everyone at the Brim. Skiing is a sport all
ages can enjoy together and Brimacombe is a great family place to do it!
