Reading Rocks -- November 2011
November is a great month to snuggle down and read with your kids as the weather takes on a chill.
New Series: Reading Rocks
The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.
Make it a habit to read bedtime stories every night (my kids can't go to sleep without one!!). Have a basket full of books (or even better a whole bookshelf) in your kids' room so they have easy access to read or just browse through a book when they're tired or want some quiet time. Happy reading!
Don't forget that you're most welcome to email us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have a special kid's book you'd like to suggest!
Luminous Mountain by Marcela Grant
We're excited to review another book by a local Ajax author (Marcela Grant). It's the tale of a young boy's spiritual journey through nature, with the help of 4 power animal friends (Serpent, Jaguar, Hummingbird & Eagle). Justin learns many valuable lessons along the way. The illustrations are both gorgeous and magical. This book is a cross between a picture book and a chapter book. We recommend it for children age 7-10.
Chocolatina by Erik Kraft
This book seems an appropriate choice right after Halloween with all its chocolates and treats. It's a fun take on the old adage "you are what you eat" when Tina (aka Chocolatina) turns into a chocolate girl after indulging in too much chocolate. A light-hearted story that has a comical surprise ending!!
HUG by Jez Alborough
Our board book pick for the month is the adorable and heart-warming simple tale called HUG. It may be sparse on words but it's big on feeling! The little monkey Bobo can't find his mother in the jungle and makes friends along the way who help console him with a hug. Of course, it has a happy ending with the reunion of Bobo and his mother in one final HUG!
Dinosaur Cove: Attack of the Tyrannosaurus by Rex Stone
This is a great 1st chapter book series for boys (girls can enjoy it too, but there always seems so much more choice in chapter books for girls!). Tom and his friend Jamie stumble upon a secret cove that leads them back into prehistoric times, and a world full of real dinosaurs. Follow their adventures as they explore and learn about these extinct giant creatures.
Scholastic has a fun website for the Dinosaur Cove series.
