For more than 25 years, The Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre has been providing medial and emotional support, along with educational programs, to hundreds of children and adults living with type 1 diabetes in the Durham region. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that is typically diagnosed in children between the ages of 18 months and 15 years of age. It strikes without warning and caregivers must learn immediately how to care for the child and keep them alive by counting carbohydrates, delivering insulin via needle or pump, monitoring for dangerous high blood sugars or life threatening low blood sugars, as well as much more. When you have type 1 diabetes, there are many challenges that can occur on a daily basis. At minimum, someone living with type 1 diabetes will test their blood sugars by poking their finger with a needle at least 6-8 times per day and inject insulin before they eat anything – this amounts to at least 5,400 needles each year, for life. While there are many organizations focused on finding a cure, The Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre is focused on keeping children and adults as healthy as possible, with programs that enable them to cope with the challenging daily demands of this disease. Each program offered is designed to help families better understand and manage their illness, and connect families who are facing similar challenges so they never feel alone. I hope this gives you a bit of insight into this very important charity and you will consider supporting our event.
