Back to articles Apple picking fun at Watson Farms

Categories: Family Fun

Fall is upon us and there are lots of great ways to get out and enjoy the season. We took our kids apple picking and had a fabulous morning.

We went to Watson Farms on Highway 2 in Bowmanville which has a huge orchard, a playground for the kids and an awesome farm market!

Everyone love the wagon ride!

Watson Farms has free tractor rides to the orchard on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. It's a short ride but lots of fun to be bumping around in the back of the wagon (and trust me, you don't want to have to walk back to the parking lot carrying a 20 lb bag of apples!) The tractor was running every five or ten minutes so you never had to wait long to catch a ride either way.

Orchard fun!

We got to the orchard and immediately starting picking apples. Of course, everyone has to sample the different types to make sure you're picking the one you like best. I thought it was fabulous to see all the families with kids, wandering through the orchards, all munching on fresh apples while they were picking!

Apple varieties

The Royal Gala apples had just come out and they're a favourite snack in our household so we couldn't wait to go pick some of our own. My daughter also wanted to do some baking so we were happy to find that Mcintosh apples were ready to pick too. My son wondered down a row of yellow apples and when he sampled one, he was totally hooked... Gingergold are now his new favourite apple, so juicy and sweet, he just loved them!

I think that Watson Farms has the popular Honey Crisp available for buying in their market, but it isn't available for picking this year, but be sure to check their website for the daily crop report.

Bag of apples!

It's a great deal to pick your own apples... they give you a reusable bag at the farm market that holds approximately 20 lbs of apples and you fill it for $28! You can mix and match varities and fill the bag however you choose.

Farm Market

We've always loved farm markets and buying FRESH produce grown by local farmers. This was one of the best markets we've been to! We got a huge haul of fresh peas (my son ate most of them on the drive back home), berries, squash, carrots, melon and corn (honestly the corn on the cob was the sweetest we've eaten all summer, and we eat a lot of local corn!)

Local farms

Visiting a local farm is a great family activity... if you're not sure where to find a farm near you, check out the farm finder on the Ontario Farm Fresh website.
